The discussions we had at this encuentro, as well as the performances we experienced, were vital in illustrating the concepts we learned in the classroom. Not only do these women fight for representation in a traditionally male-dominated field for themselves, but they also work to ensure the rights of many different types of people: trans/queer, indigenous, Afro-Ecuadorian, etc., thus representing the multi-dimensional feminism of Latin America. At the encuentro, art was mainly represented through the musical form of hip-hop however, we also learned that expression comes in all shapes and forms. We also included the architecture of and artwork in the venue to provide an indication of the place and environment that the encuentro took place in. We also wanted to include a picture of the participants to illustrate the diversity among those who want to learn about feminism and support the movement. We selected pictures of the rappers discussing important concepts and sharing stories as well as pictures of them rapping to represent their commitment to raising awareness about feminism and feminist issues. As such, our group wanted to select pictures that adequately represented the diversity, seriousness, and enjoyableness of the event. Not only did this encuentro invite a diverse group of people to discuss their thoughts and experiences on sensitive topics such as racism and sexism, but it also allowed the participants to come together and appreciate the hip hop music created by the rappers. Female rappers Taki Amaru, Caye Cayejera, Ana Gabriela Cano (“Black Mama”), and Jeka Libre engaged us in a open dialogue about feminism and shared their musical creations with us afterwards. On August 14, 2017, our class had the opportunity to participate in a Feminista Hip-Hop Encuentro.
